The Charles Bond Company stock line of worms and worm gears (also referred to as worm wheels) are made to perform to the most rigorous applications.  The worm gears are made of either Class 40 Cast Iron or Bronze.  The worms are made of high quality steel and for those operating with bronze, available in the hardened condition.  We can make Special Gears out of just about any material, however, certain materials do not operate well with other materials due to friction and other operating losses.   Regardless of the inefficiency of worm gearing, they allow for high ratios in a rather compact space.  Also, it should be noted that our stock gears are based on the recommendations of the American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA)   which are Diametral Pitch Gears.  We are seeing more and more Module (Metric) Pitch Gears in the market place and have many of the cutters required to manufacture this type of gearing.      

Identification/Numbering System Example and Explaination:

(a) The first letter in the symbol indicates the Material - (R) = Cast Iron; (S) = Steel  and (B) = Bronze or Brass

(b) The number after the first letter indicates the Pitch - 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 or 24

(c) The next letter   indicates the Type of Gear - (W) for Worms and (G) for Worm Gears.

(d) The next letter indicates the Number of Threads (or Starts)  the worm has and and   the corresponding gear. (A)= Single Thread, (D)= Double Thread & (Q)= Quad (4) Thread.

(e) The last number applying to the gear only is the Number of Teeth.

(f) If there is a letter at the end, this will indicate in the case of the Worm whether it is   Hardened, and in some instances a Long or Short worm.  In the case of the Worm Gear,   this indicates there was a change at some point, generally the bore or possibly the hub dimensions.
